Jennie Bates
Jennie Bates is a Scottish visual artist. Her practice reflects a curiosity (and often bewilderment) around systems and structures which seem nonsensical or opaque to her. Her works play with the boundaries between two and three dimensions, and often compress long time periods or large spaces into single images which convey a lot of information at once, reflecting her thought processes. She’s constantly trying to understand and find meaning in an inherently disordered world - attempting to capture the dissonance between that chaos and her need to carefully categorise everything. She’s particularly interested in the pre- and early-internet era, before we had such an overload of documentation, and deliberately limits her own access to visual information in making her work.
She lives and works in Glasgow, Scotland.
